Embark on a Surprise Journey – Yunnan
The first trip of 2025 came unexpectedly. The boss generously approved a tourism budget of 40000 yuan and notified us to immediately go on a group building trip to Xishuangbanna, Yunnan. With only one day of preparation time, everyone hurriedly handed over their work and hastily packed their travel supplies. Until the eve of departure, everything remained like an unreal dream. This is my second time setting foot on the land of Yunnan. The last trip to Lijiang is still vivid in my mind, but what different customs and traditions will Xishuangbanna, which I am about to encounter, bring? My heart is filled with anticipation.
At five o’clock in the morning on March 6, rainstorm poured in, and the temperature dropped suddenly, as if it had been winter overnight. We split into two teams, Dongguan and Shenzhen, and headed to the airport respectively. Colleagues arrived one after another, but only Quality rushed all the way due to traffic congestion. Fortunately, there was no danger and everyone gathered smoothly. As boarding approached, the rain intensified and colleagues without umbrellas put on the blue raincoats issued by the airport. The shuttle bus arrived on time, and everyone ran to get on board. I looked at the dim and damp ground and wanted to place my luggage on the platform inside the car, so I said to the two blue figures in front, ‘Excuse me.’. After packing my luggage, I heard someone imitate my tone and chuckle, “I borrowed it again… hehehehehe. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be two engineering colleagues from the company – wrapped in blue plastic raincoats, with disheveled hairstyles and two blue Russian nesting dolls, their comical appearance making them laugh at me? Ha ha ha ha!
A two-hour journey feels like crossing time and space. During takeoff, dark clouds covered the sky and the cabin was pitch black; Approaching Xishuangbanna, the sky outside is clear for thousands of miles, and the sunlight is so dazzling that people dare not look directly at it. The plane slowly landed, and from the beautiful scenery at the airport, one could feel the rich ethnic flavor. Looking at the disheveled appearance of our group wrapped in thick coats, it was out of place with the lively atmosphere of the local area. Fortunately, Ms. Zhong from the travel finance department had already contacted the hotel driver and successfully escorted us to our accommodation. After checking in and changing into light clothes, everyone gathered in the hotel lobby to sweep away their travel fatigue and rejuvenate their spirits.
It was already lunchtime, and the hotel staff warmly recommended an authentic Dai restaurant. Opening the menu, the names of the dishes are novel and unfamiliar, so we can only blindly choose or accept recommendations based on our feelings. While waiting for the dishes to be served, several colleagues curiously stood on the windowsill, wanting to see what the ingredients were. The boss patiently answered each question one by one. And the topic ultimately focused on a dessert, just because its name was “so long winded”, everyone understood, and a bunch of people asked it quite “long winded”, thinking that the boss was joking with us even after finishing it. Later on, I found out that this dish is indeed called “Luosuo”, which is a Dai ethnic specialty dessert. It is wrapped in banana leaves and steamed sweet rice cake.
In the afternoon, we went to the nearest Menglong Buddhist Temple. Along the way, ethnic characteristic buildings are arranged in a staggered manner. We curiously asked the driver who led the team why the roofs were all pointed. The driver explained that in the past, they were mostly grass houses, and the pointed roofs were convenient for rainwater to flow downstream. Later, with the improvement of living conditions, this characteristic was also preserved. Arriving at the entrance of the Great Buddha Temple, the golden temple came into view, filled with a strong Buddhist atmosphere. Riding a sightseeing bus up the mountain, a golden pagoda building stands out prominently. Standing on the mountaintop, the beautiful scenery of Jinghong City can be seen in full view. Walking down from the mountaintop, we arrived at the Holy Bodhi Tree. Miss Wei followed the guidance of the staff and devoutly prayed for the company. Further down, there is the renowned auspicious Buddha – standing 45 meters tall on a nine meter high lotus throne, overlooking all living beings. The left palm of the Buddha statue naturally droops outward, symbolizing the eradication of greed, anger, and delusion; The auspicious lotus finger on the right hand is flat on the chest, aiming to educate people to break free from the shackles of pain. We mostly pray devoutly for ourselves and our families here. Under the statue of Buddha, the eighteen Arhat are neatly arranged with different expressions, which fully demonstrates the unique charm and wisdom of Arhat in Buddhist culture. Continuing down, there are four temples showcasing the cultural characteristics of Buddhist beliefs in different countries, namely Sri Lanka Temple, Thailand Temple, Myanmar Temple, and Laos Temple. The grand hall at the bottom of the mountain is magnificent, with Buddhist story murals painted on the interior walls, which is very eye-catching. Afterwards, we visited the Songshui Square and Peacock Garden at the foot of the mountain. Although they were novel and interesting, they inevitably had a commercial atmosphere. After playing all day, we girls were already exhausted and went back to the hotel to rest. But the three male colleagues started a ‘rampage mode’. On the morning of March 7th, after enjoying breakfast in the hotel restaurant, we embarked on the long-awaited hiking trip to the tropical rainforest. The hotel staff drove for over an hour and drove us towards the depths of the mountains. As the journey progresses, the scenery outside the car window becomes more primitive, and we are getting closer to the Myanmar border. Along the way, everyone enthusiastically talked about the interesting stories of neighboring countries or imagined the stories along the border, and laughter echoed in the carriage.
After arriving at the destination, we prepared drinking water, anti mosquito spray, ointment and rain boots. A dark skinned Jino uncle warmly welcomed us. Our first project is bamboo rafting. The bamboo raft area looks like it was simply built in a small pool, but after everyone grouped and experienced it, they all found it very enjoyable. Next was the archery event at the bottom of the mountain. After a brief wait in line, we picked up our bows and arrows one after another, feeling the pleasure of pulling strings and shooting arrows. Subsequently, following the steep slope, we truly stepped into the dense jungle. The mosquito prevention preparations made before departure came in handy. As soon as we stepped into the jungle, the heat was isolated, and the humid air carried a chill that rushed towards us. The sound of gurgling streams lingered in our ears.
